When we arrived the dune was bare and moving. Every storm took a little more of it. So every spring since 2017 we have planted marram grass by hand, one plug at a time.

Marram roots run deep and sideways, and they hold the sand in place. Four thousand plugs later, the dune is green again.

How we plant

—  Plugs go in during March, before the dry weather

—  Rows run across the wind, a hand's width apart

—  Guests are welcome to help on planting weekends

The House from the dune path, with new marram along the edge.

What it changed

The path is steadier, the birds have come back and the House no longer gets a dusting of sand after every gale. Please keep to the path when you walk to the beach.
